Youngsters Step Up for a Cleaner Phalombe

Young people in Phalombe have stepped up to keep their communities clean thanks to a local group called Tiwasamale. The youth-centered organization recently cleaned the Phalombe Market area and fixed clogged drains around town. Their actions help fight waterborne illnesses like cholera through better sanitation. The group wants other young people across the district to join similar efforts.

Gift Kasanga leads Tiwasamale as Executive Director and believes young citizens must take charge of community cleanliness. He told reporters after the cleanup that waiting for council workers limits what communities can achieve. Kasanga stressed that youth should view these activities as their duty rather than optional volunteer work. He wants them to feel responsible for market spaces and public areas.

Phalombe District Youth Officer Halson Bulangeti praised Tiwasamale for showing how young people can change their communities. He noted how the group brought together various youth clubs to participate in cleaning projects. Their work not only makes places look better but also helps rainwater flow properly during storms. This prevents flooding and creates healthier public spaces for everyone.

The local government also appreciates these youth-led efforts. Yasin Mtesha Mbewe, an Environmental Officer at Phalombe District Council, believes young people bring energy and fresh ideas to sanitation work. He mentioned that when youth take the lead, cleanup programs last longer and reach more areas. Mbewe encouraged all young residents to follow Tiwasamale's example and make cleanliness a personal priority.
