Youths cry foul over sneaky tax law switch-up

A northern youth organization has strongly criticized the recently signed tax legislation. The Arewa Youth Assembly accused President Bola Tinubu of governing by surprise, calling the new laws a form of ambush. The group's speaker, Mohammed Salihu-Danlami, issued a statement from Kaduna outlining their complaints.

The assembly claims the official version of the tax laws published for the public is different from what the National Assembly originally passed. They warned that this discrepancy poses a serious political risk if not corrected. Their rejection stems from what they see as a troubling mismatch between the legislature's work and the document presented to citizens. The statement argued that legislation represents the people's collective will, not a private document, and that democracy is undermined if the final law is altered.

These reformed tax laws, described by the federal government as the most significant overhaul in decades, are set to become active at the start of next year.
