Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has given authorities a clear deadline to get ready for the next national election. He wants all preparations finished by December during a meeting with top law enforcement officials at the state guest house Jamuna. The polls will probably happen in February or April according to what he told the security chiefs. Home advisers and police bosses from different forces attended the important gathering yesterday.
Yunus had already hinted that elections might take place in early April when he spoke before Eid-ul-Azha. His press secretary Shafiqul Alam explained that the leader wants everything done before Ramadan starts. The Chief Adviser believes February could work if reforms get implemented fast enough. He met with BNP acting chief Tarique Rahman in London back in June where they discussed the timing. Rahman suggested holding the vote before the holy month begins.
The timeline keeps getting tighter as Ramadan approaches in late February. Yunus seems determined to stick with his promise of democratic elections after months of political upheaval. Security forces must prepare for what could be a challenging period. The meeting covered how different agencies will handle election duties and maintain order. Everyone appears focused on making sure the country gets back to normal democratic processes.
