ZACC probes Harare Quarry's US$4.5m magic act

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating the disappearance of $4.5 million from Harare Quarry, a City Council subsidiary, according to ZACC spokesperson Kindness Paradza. The funds were provided as a loan for quarry recapitalization, but forensic auditors from Parker Randall Chartered Accountants found the money could not be accounted for, with additional concerns about $56,000 in suspected payments to ghost workers and missing payment documentation. The quarry allegedly operated without disclosing revenue, profits, or dividends to the council since receiving the loan.

Mayor Jacob Mafume filed reports with ZACC and police only after facing questions from the Harare Commission of Inquiry about the council's failure to act on the audit findings. Resident Trymore Timuri and Combined Harare Residents Association director Reuben Akili expressed frustration over the lack of arrests and slow progress, with Akili pledging to raise the matter during budget reviews.
