Zagreb Airport tunnel plan unveiled, rail link nears

HŽ Infrastruktura has finalized a massive plan to link central Zagreb directly to the airport using a high-speed railway and a new underground tunnel. According to a detailed report from officials, the project involves a six-kilometer line starting from the Odra interchange and ending at a brand new station beneath the passenger terminal. The most complex part of the work includes a 2.8-kilometer tunnel that will pass under the Velika Mlaka area to avoid disrupting local traffic. This infrastructure upgrade is intended to slash travel times to the city center down to just a few minutes while adding two dedicated stations at the airport site.

The analyst noted that this construction is part of a larger strategy to overhaul the national rail network over the next decade. Plans show that the tracks will cross over an existing street on a new bridge before descending into the ground near the intersection of Rudolf Fizira. Experts mentioned that this design was chosen specifically to create a seamless connection for both local commuters and international travelers. Beyond the civilian benefits, the project also creates a more secure route for military operations at the nearby airfield. Leaders stated that while the planning phase is nearly done, the actual building process will take several years to finalize.
