Zambia Copper Queens chase WAFCON dream

Zambia's women's football team will play at their fourth Women's Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The Copper Queens appeared at the last two competitions held across Ghana and Morocco. Their greatest success came during the Morocco event when they grabbed third place after beating Nigeria. The team also made history at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup where they defeated Costa Rica during their first appearance. They have competed at two Olympic Games tournaments during 2020 and 2024.

Swiss coach Nora Häuptle leads the squad after taking charge during January 2025. The team features players from Zambian clubs mixed with stars who compete overseas. Barbra Banda plays for Orlando Pride and represents one of their top talents. Grace Chanda also suits up for Orlando Pride alongside teammate Banda. Racheal Kundananji rounds out the American-based trio as she plays for Bay FC.

Tournament organizers placed Zambia into Group A for the upcoming competition. The Copper Queens will face host nation Morocco during their opening match on Saturday July 5 at Olympic Stadium located within Rabat. Their second game pits them against Senegal on Wednesday July 9 at El Bachir Stadium situated within Mohammedia. The final group stage encounter sees them battle DR Congo on Saturday July 12 at the same El Bachir Stadium venue.
