Zambian peacekeeper killed in CAR ambush

Armed attackers killed a Zambian soldier working for the United Nations peacekeeping force. The deadly assault happened Friday when gunmen targeted a UN patrol near Am-Sissia. Another Zambian peacekeeper got hurt during the same attack. The violence occurred close to the border with Sudan where war continues to rage.

This marks the third time killers have struck UN troops during 2025. Earlier attacks claimed the lives of soldiers from Kenya and Tunisia. Two peacekeepers from Nepal suffered injuries just days ago after another assault. UN officials expressed anger about the rising number of attacks against their forces.

Around 150 peacekeepers have died since the UN mission started operating eleven years ago. The organization sent 17,000 soldiers to help bring peace to the troubled nation. Central African Republic has suffered through many years of civil wars and harsh rulers. The country remains one of the poorest places on Earth.

Sudan's ongoing civil war makes the security situation much worse for neighboring areas. Fighting between government troops and rebel militias has killed thousands of people. Millions more have fled their homes to escape the violence. Some armed groups use Central African Republic as a base for recruiting fighters and moving supplies.

Security has improved somewhat thanks to local forces and foreign allies. Russian mercenaries and Rwandan troops have helped government soldiers gain ground. However, dangerous attacks still happen regularly on roads throughout the eastern and northwestern regions. UN mission leaders want local authorities to catch the people responsible for these deadly strikes.
