Zanu PF Warns Tagwirei to Drop Prez Dreams

Businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei wants to become Zimbabwe's next president but faces serious opposition from party leaders. Chris Mutsvangwa warned the wealthy man about his political dreams during a Wednesday press conference. Senior Zanu PF members plan to push Tagwirei into top party positions against the wishes of other leaders. President Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly supports the businessman as his replacement when he steps down. Mutsvangwa said people who join the party just for power will face major challenges from voters.

Mnangagwa fears that his deputy Constantino Chiwenga will arrest corrupt business partners after taking control of the country. The president wants to stop Chiwenga from becoming the next leader through constitutional changes that extend his term until 2030. Mnangagwa would resign early and let his chosen successor serve the remaining years before elections happen. This plan requires changing the constitution and winning a public vote about the amendments. Party insiders believe Mnangagwa thinks war veterans should step aside for younger politicians.
