Zanzibar preps immigration overhaul for tourist influx

Tourism numbers are exploding, pushing the government to force immigration officers to actually be nice. Visitor counts jumped from roughly 1.9 million to over two million recently, generating over ten trillion shillings. Minister George Simbachawene told staff in Zanzibar that treating travelers like royalty is mandatory because bad vibes drive away cash.

The official insisted that agents act as the face of the nation rather than just stamping passports. He argued that officers need to step in if they see foreigners getting hassled on the street. Simbachawene wants every employee to function as a top-tier diplomat representing national dignity.

Hiring standards got stricter since the administration demands a diploma or higher for entry. The minister pushed for fluency in languages like French and Chinese to handle diverse crowds. He suggested that training schools should teach wildlife trivia, ensuring agents know what they are selling.

Zanzibar Immigration Commissioner Hassan Ally Hassan listed construction projects happening in Micheweni and Paje to improve conditions. The department is building a training college at Kitogani alongside new housing. These upgrades aim to match the expanding investment landscape while ensuring staff can handle the pressure.
