Zara Mahathir case gagged, Shafie faces contempt heat in Sabah

Legal representatives confirmed that judicial restrictions continue preventing public commentary on the Zara Qairina Mahathir case proceedings. The thirteen-year-old student died after being discovered unconscious at her Papar boarding school dormitory during July. Authorities initially treated the incident as sudden death before family pressure prompted an official inquest. Five classmates face charges for allegedly directing abusive language toward Zara before her death.

Defense attorney Ram Singh initiated contempt proceedings against Warisan president Shafie Apdal over recent political remarks. The Sabah Law Society and Human Rights Commission supported this legal action against the opposition leader. Sessions Court judge Elsie Primus granted Suhakam representatives observer status during future hearings. The case returns to court on October sixteenth for additional procedural matters.
