Zim builds 12 big dams to boost farms, fight drought

Zimbabwe is betting big on giant dams to fix its water problems. The government is building twelve major new reservoirs nationwide. This push aims to irrigate hundreds of thousands of hectares for farming.

Permanent Secretary Obert Jiri stated these projects form the core of rural development. They provide water for drinking and create irrigation schemes for crops. The goal is to transform smallholder farmers' lives and boost their harvests.

Several dams are already finished and operational. These include Tokwe Mukosi, Muchekeranwa, Marovanyati, and Chivhu Dam. They currently deliver essential water services to local communities and fields.

Construction continues on other key sites like Kunzvi and Gwayi-Shangani Dams. The budget for these high-impact structures exceeds one billion US dollars. Kunzvi is sixty-five percent complete and will supply Harare.

The Gwayi-Shangani Dam is over seventy two percent done. It is critical for ending Bulawayo's chronic water shortages. It will also support irrigation and unlock industrial potential for the city.

This dam construction drive is part of a long-term climate adaptation strategy. Reliable water supplies help farmers withstand shifting weather patterns. The government is also drilling thousands of village boreholes nationwide.

Officials see these dams sparking broader economic growth. They create construction jobs and enable new fisheries. A steady water supply supports sustainable farming programs like Pfumvudza.

Some projects even have regional cooperation aims. The planned Runde-Tende Dam may export water to South Africa's Limpopo province. This highlights a resource-sharing approach.

The Treasury allocated four hundred million in local currency to finish two flagship dams. The focus remains on ending water crises in major cities while empowering rural communities through irrigation.
