Zimbabwe unveils tobacco plant to boost farmer income

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has commissioned a new tobacco processing facility in Harare, a development intended to transform the nation's agricultural sector. The plant, developed by Simon Rudland, aims to end Zimbabwe's long-standing practice of exporting nearly all its tobacco as raw leaf.

Currently, most farmers sell their unprocessed leaf through a merchant financing system that significantly reduces their profits. The new operation plans to bypass these merchants by offering farmers direct financing and processing their tobacco into cut rag. This processed product commands a much higher price on the global market. Officials project this shift could multiply farmer incomes and retain hundreds of millions of dollars in value within the country that was previously lost to foreign entities.

The initiative is seen as a major step toward industrializing the nation's most important agricultural export. By capturing more value domestically, the project is expected to improve Zimbabwe's foreign exchange earnings and economic stability.
