Zimbabwe and Hunan Team Up on Mining and Growth

China stands ready to share its mineral processing expertise with Zimbabwe, according to Hunan City Deputy Mayor Cao Zhiqiang, after meeting with Mines Minister Winston Chitando in Harare.

As a global leader in mineral beneficiation, China's partnership offers Zimbabwe significant help for local resource processing. The meeting highlighted growing economic connections between both nations, especially in mining, which serves as a key pillar for Zimbabwe's economic transformation.

Chitando praised China's consistent support during Zimbabwe's independence struggle. Zimbabwe welcomes business. Our mining sector remains under-explored despite containing more than 60 minerals," he said.

President Mnangagwa's administration follows a three-part mining strategy: reopening closed mines, activating operations needing minimal exploration, and expanding new exploration through licensing. Hunan's advanced technology might attract investment into the mining value chain, speed up processing, and help develop the infrastructure needed for Vision 2030.

Zimbabwe aims for a $12 billion mining economy, with Chinese cooperation expected to provide capital for underused resources. Cao shared that Hunan's trade with Zimbabwe grew 73 percent in 2023, and over 80 Hunan companies are currently operating there.
