Zimbabwe boarding school chef arrested after assault on student

A school chef attacked a student at Ruya Adventist High School in Mt Darwin after accusing her of spreading rumors. Lesley Bizwell locked Meloshance Kashingaidze inside a toilet and beat her severely. The student suffered a broken left hand and bruises across her body during the assault. Meloshance begged for mercy when her hand broke during the attack. School officials arrested Bizwell three days after the incident occurred.

The deputy headmaster rushed the injured student to Mt Darwin Hospital without filing a police report first. Hospital staff refused to treat Meloshance until authorities provided proper documentation. Other students and staff members became angry about the school's attempt to hide the assault. Some students threatened to stage protests over the cover-up attempt. The hospital nurse's demand for a police report led to the chef's eventual arrest.

Meloshance said she never understood what accusations prompted the violent attack against her. The student thought Bizwell wanted her to clean the toilet when she was asked to enter. The chef used heavy objects and safety shoes during the brutal beating. Meloshance cried for help and asked for forgiveness during the assault. Bizwell showed regret only after the hospital refused treatment without police involvement.

Records show Bizwell previously attacked students at Junction Adventist School before transferring to Ruya. The chef faces court appearance today for the assault charges. School authorities failed to keep the incident secret after hospital staff insisted on following proper procedures.
