Zimbabwe Cabinet OKs Media Policy Overhaul

According to Dr. Jenfan Muswere from the Information Ministry, Zimbabwe just approved a brand new media policy. The government created this plan to guard Zimbabwe's reputation around the world and keep its borders secure. They want to build up digital business opportunities and ensure that many different media voices exist throughout the country.

The plan calls for updating all media equipment and technology across Zimbabwe. It pushes news companies to act more professionally and follow strict behavior rules that should make reporting better everywhere. Leaders hope these changes will help media businesses stay financially healthy over many years.

This policy tries to teach citizens about Zimbabwe's core beliefs and history. Officials believe it helps everyone share the same vision about where the country should head next. Dr. Muswere explained that promoting national interests through media will boost social progress, economic growth, cultural development, and political stability.

The government wants Zimbabwe to control its media destiny without outside influence. That means keeping independence over what stories get told and how rules work. They plan to include all official languages in broadcasts and publications so every community receives information. These rules will cover everything - even shows and content streaming through the internet.

Under these new rules, radio stations and TV channels must play Zimbabwe-made programs 75 percent of the time. Special channels have a lower requirement, at 50 percent. The government says this fights against foreign shows taking over and encourages local producers to create more content. They promise to protect the rights of creators.

Dr. Muswere discussed how the sixth part of the policy tackles several problems. These include money shortages for production, limited skills among local creators, and foreign shows dominating screens. Special working groups will focus on different parts of the policy. The Information Ministry plans to lead efforts to ensure everything happens correctly.
