Zimbabwe confronts Secure, Control smuggling ring to South Africa

Zimbabwe authorities have confirmed widespread theft of government contraceptives from public healthcare facilities. Medical staff systematically remove Secure and Control brand pills from hospital inventories before selling them to cross-border smugglers. These medications reach underground markets throughout South African townships, where demand remains exceptionally high. Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Aspect Maunganidze revealed that electronic tracking systems have been installed across more than 1,000 medical centers. Previous incidents at Masvingo Provincial Hospital resulted in staff terminations and criminal charges.

Healthcare workers falsify dispensing records while removing hundreds of pill packets each week. Transportation networks hide the stolen contraceptives within legitimate cargo shipments at border crossings. South African vendors purchase the smuggled products and resell them at double the original price to migrant women. Springs of Life Zimbabwe demands criminal prosecution for those participating in this illegal trade network. The organization argues that diverting subsidized medications harms vulnerable Zimbabwean women who depend on affordable family planning resources.
