Zimbabwe marks World Town Planning Day with a focus on sustainable development

Zimbabwe recently observed World Town Planning Day alongside numerous other countries, emphasizing the critical role of urban planning in building sustainable communities. This year’s theme, “With Planning, We Can,” highlighted the collective responsibility of all sectors in shaping resilient and inclusive human settlements. The observance underscored how coordinated planning addresses challenges like climate change, pollution, and inadequate infrastructure.

The nation has advanced its planning efforts through a comprehensive initiative requiring all local authorities to develop Spatial Master Plans. These documents, formulated with extensive community input, establish development goals for the next 15 to 20 years. They guide investment in essential infrastructure and services while integrating climate adaptation strategies.

These master plans are regarded as vital instruments for achieving national economic and social development objectives. They aim to ensure balanced growth and the equitable distribution of resources across the country.
