Zimbabwe MP Scores Over 4 Million US in Gold Bonus

Social media users questioned a $4.2 million payment to Betterbrands Petroleum for gold incentives. The government pays a 5% bonus to companies that deliver gold through official channels. This policy helps stop gold smuggling to South Africa and other countries. Small miners can earn extra money when they sell gold legally. The program encourages people to use proper channels instead of illegal ones.

Betterbrands supplies huge amounts of gold to Zimbabwe each month. The company brings between $200 million and $300 million worth of gold monthly. Over several years, Betterbrands delivered 60 tonnes of gold worth more than $6 billion. Finance officials must pay incentives to all companies that deliver gold legally. Many other businesses also receive these bonus payments.

The payment went to Betterbrands Petroleum account instead of another company account. This choice does not break any rules or laws. Companies can pick which bank account receives their payments. Government officials handle hundreds of payments every day across different programs. Audit officials check all government spending to make sure everything follows the rules.
