Zimbabwe on Edge as Military Rift Nears Boiling Point

Academic Blessing-Miles Tendi warns that Zimbabwe faces another dangerous political crisis. His new book studies how military leaders removed Robert Mugabe from power in 2017. Tendi believes the next government change could create much more violence and chaos. Liberation war veterans want President Emmerson Mnangagwa to quit his job immediately. These important groups support Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga instead of the current leader.

Someone tried to kill Air Marshal Perrance Shiri back in December 2008. Unknown gunmen shot at Shiri as he drove alone to his farm that night. The wounded officer escaped, but nobody ever caught the shooters who used government bullets. Military leaders began suspecting each other after this mysterious attack happened. Trust between different army groups broke apart and never healed properly.

Army commanders no longer agree about major decisions like they did during 2017. Different military factions support different political leaders across the country. Tendi fears that another coup attempt would split the armed forces into fighting groups. Such divisions could lead to civil war instead of peaceful government changes. Zimbabwe stands at a crossroads between stability and complete breakdown of order.
