Zimbabwe Targets 120 New Schools in Major Education Push

Zimbabwe plans to build 120 new schools throughout the country during 2025. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo shared this news with parliament members. The government has already found the money needed for these construction projects. Moyo spoke during a response to an education committee report that pointed out serious problems with existing school buildings.

"Resources permitting, the ministry will focus on building more schools to address these challenges," Moyo explained during the parliamentary session. The National Building Society has provided funding for 30 of these planned schools through the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion. This follows a successful model previously used by Chinhoyi University. These new schools will spread across all ten provinces in Zimbabwe.

OPEC Funding for International Development has promised additional money to support Zimbabwe's education goals. During the first school term, they will give $20 million toward constructing more learning facilities. Their contribution will help build 50 schools throughout the nation. This includes 40-day schools where students return home each evening and 10 boarding schools where students live on campus.

The Zimbabwe government aims to build at least 100 schools through its direct efforts. Additional schools will come from private donors and businesses who want to support education. These partners will fund private schools and colleges to help reach the total goal of 120 new learning centers. The education ministry also plans to construct at least 300 new classrooms at existing schools.

Minister Moyo explained they want to help students who currently travel far distances to reach school. "In those areas, we are going to build new schools," he stated clearly. Education officials plan to work with Members of Parliament who understand which areas need schools most urgently. They will focus construction efforts on communities where children face the longest walks to reach education facilities.
