Zimbabwe to open $400m lithium plant

Zimbabwe will launch Africa's first lithium sulfate processing facility in 2026, with projected annual earnings of 320 million dollars. Information Minister Jenfan Muswere announced the 400-million-dollar plant being built by Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe at the Arcadia Mine in Goromonzi. The complex features three production lines that will convert 500,000 metric tons of ore concentrate each year into battery manufacturing materials.

The first production line is scheduled to start operations in January 2026, followed by two additional lines in April. The annual output is expected to reach 80,000 metric tons of lithium sulfate upon full operational capacity. The facility will employ more than 1,000 workers, positioning the southern African nation as a key supplier to the electric vehicle industry, rather than exporting unprocessed minerals.
