Zimbabwe war vets gear up to flip poverty upside down

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa told war veterans they remain key players helping the country reach upper-middle-class status. He spoke at a Friday meeting with veterans and launched new support programs for them. The president said these former fighters still have important work to do for Zimbabwe's future.

Mnangagwa reminded the veterans they fought together against colonial rule and won independence. He said their mission continues with a different kind of battle for economic freedom. The president explained that past fights happened across battlefields throughout Zimbabwe, from Gaza and Tete to various local areas.

The current fight takes place at farms, factories, roads, schools and hospitals according to Mnangagwa. Veterans must help build the country's mines and welcome visitors to make Zimbabwe successful. The president believes all Zimbabweans can live well through this work.

Mnangagwa praised veterans for staying alert and exposing troublemakers who work against Zimbabwe's interests. He said their shared history and strong political awareness help keep the country victorious. The president asked them to keep removing bad actors from positions of influence.

War veterans fought to end white colonial rule and many died during the struggle. Mnangagwa said their sacrifice appears on Zimbabwe's national flag. Economic sanctions and attacks on the ruling ZANU PF party continue to challenge the country.
