Zimra busts corrupt border officers

Officials at Zimbabwe's tax office found three border workers who took money to help bring in old cars, which is against the law.

A new rule from January 2024 states that cars more than 10 years old cannot enter Zimbabwe. But three workers at the Victoria Falls Border helped people break this rule.

The workers - Phillip Kuvenga, 28, Rangariraishe Zingwe, 29, and Jean Felix Kadaro, 30 - changed papers to make old cars look legal. They lived in UTC houses and worked as tax officers.

These officers would write false details on papers. They would show their boss the wrong papers, and after the boss said yes, they would put the true details in the final papers.

Their plan failed when they wrote papers for a car that had not arrived in Zimbabwe. This made others look into their work.

The police arrested all three workers. They went to court before Mr Gift Manyika, who rules on cases in Victoria Falls. The court said they misused their jobs as public workers.

The judge kept them in jail until February 17. That day, the court will start to hear their case.

The tax office said these crimes happened all through 2024. The workers helped bring in many cars that broke the 10-year rule.

Court papers say they would take papers from people who wanted to bring in cars. They wrote the wrong car numbers on these papers, tricking their boss, who could not see how old the cars were.

After their boss approved the papers, they wrote the true details on the computer. They then changed the old papers or made new ones.

The workers let these cars into Zimbabwe without writing them in the proper books. They did not follow the rules about checking cars at the border.

Mrs Portia Moyo leads the case against Kuvenga and Zingwe. Ms Audrey Mukanganya leads the case against Kadaro.

The court did not let them out on bail. They must stay in jail until their trial starts.
