ZimTrade Scans Uganda to Boost Zimbabwe Exports

ZimTrade has launched a market research initiative in Uganda to discover new export possibilities for Zimbabwean companies. This trade mission, which runs from February 24 through March 5, 2025, will allow businesses from Zimbabwe to connect with Ugandan partners across multiple sectors.

The research focuses on agriculture, protective clothing, manufacturing, processed foods, clothing, textiles, building materials, and construction. These industries represent significant growth potential within Uganda's expanding economy. Zimbabwean firms can leverage these opportunities to meet increasing demand throughout Uganda and possibly neighboring markets.

Most activities will occur in Kampala, Uganda's capital city. The mission forms part of ZimTrade and the Zimbabwean government's broader effort to expand into different export destinations and access non-traditional markets.

This approach supports Zimbabwe's export strategy, which aims to increase exports by at least 10 percent yearly, as detailed in the National Export Strategy. The plan projects growth from approximately $4 billion in 2018 to $14 billion by 2030.

The initiative also aligns with economic integration goals under the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to establish a unified market for goods and services across Africa.

Allan Majuru, ZimTrade's chief executive officer, explained that the market research helps build strong connections between Zimbabwean exporters and buyers throughout the continent.

"Our target is to gain valuable insights into the Ugandan market dynamics, consumer preferences, and regulatory requirements that will foster stronger economic ties, particularly under the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa trade agreement," Majuru said.

He added that these insights would help Zimbabwean businesses customize their products to meet the specific needs of Ugandan consumers, improving success rates. The direct engagement with Ugandan distributors, manufacturers, and other key businesses creates valuable commercial relationships.

Uganda has emerged as an increasingly important destination for Zimbabwean exports due to substantial growth in import demand recently. Total imports to Uganda increased from $9.09 billion in 2021 to $11.78 billion in 2023, demonstrating economic expansion and rising demand across various product categories.

Exports from Zimbabwe to Uganda have shown encouraging growth trends. The current market research should uncover additional possibilities for Zimbabwean products in this dynamic marketplace.

ZimTrade encourages businesses from Zimbabwe to participate in this mission to explore fresh trade possibilities and enhance existing commercial relationships with Uganda.
