mwari
means a supreme deity (a supernatural omnipotent being) or a god.
Note: In contemporary times the word mwari is often misconstrued to only refer to the Christian deity i.e., Jehovah (of the Holy Bible) which is not entirely correct because mwari is a general term for either a Divine Being or an idol; but some Zimbos for whatever reason relentlessly try to monopolize its meaning. Thus, a more befitting chiShona word in the context of Christianity is Yave which translates to Yahweh.
There are of course other monotheistic religions and below are their corresponding supreme deities:
Religion | Supreme deity |
---|---|
Baháʼí Faith | Allah or God |
Judaism | YHWH (Yahweh) |
Islam | Allah |
Rastafari | Jah |
Sikhism | Waheguru |
Vodou | Bondye |
Yazidism | Lucifer (Melek Taus) |
Zoroastrianism | Ahura Mazda |
Chivanhu (ATR) | Chibwechitedza (or Chikara, Matangakugara, Musikavanhu, Musiki, Muumbapasi, Mwari Matonjeni, Nyadenga, Samatenga, Wokumusoro) |
etc. | etc. |
