shavi (or shave)​


this is a foreign or alien spirit (mweya wemutorwa) that is not associated with your clan's tutelary spirit (mhondoro) or the spirit of your ancestor (mudzimu). By the way, be mindful that there is a difference between mhondoro and mudzimu.

Note: The plural form for either shavi or shave is mashavi or mashave respectively.

So since mashavi are spirits of dead people not related to your dzinza ("clan" or "tribe"). They roam around until they find a living person who is willing to ritually accept and wholeheartedly host them with honor.

And in return, they will aid that person depending on what that shavi is adept at because they all have different expertise. It is also important to say some mashavi can be malevolent too.

Below is a phrase that warns people about avoiding such scenarios:
chishona: "muchenjere kupembedza ngozi muchiti mudzimu."

translation: "becareful of venerating an avenging spirit thinking it's your ancestral spirit."
