Drum layering is a music production technique with the main purpose of stacking multiple drums together (e.g. two different kick drums or two different snare drums playing at the same time).

So layering drums is similar to "creating a wall of sound" except here the idea isn't necessary to go overboard with it and this is done often when sequencing drums in a Digital Audio Workstation (i.e music production software).

However, music producers aren't the only people who layer drums during music production but also mixing engineers when they need to sort out their drums to knock very hard especially to accommodate an issue of translation when played on small speakers and cheap headphones.
