In the Shona language (or Chivanhu), zarira has two meanings:
- To close – For example, to shut a door.
- To be short of breath – Feeling like you can't breathe easily after running or being tired.

- Zarira musuwo usati wabuda. (Close the door before you go out.)
- Ndapota zarira gonhi, mhepo iri kupinda. (Please close the door, the wind is coming in.)
- Mwana ari kuzarirwa nekuda kweasthma. (The child is short of breath because of asthma.)
- Kana uchizarirwa, gara pasi uzorore. (If you are short of breath, sit down and rest.)
- Akakwira gomo, akazosvika ari kuzarirwa. (He climbed the mountain and arrived short of breath.)
