19 die as wedding car plunges into river in Gummi, Zamfara

A tragic vehicle accident claimed nineteen lives in Zamfara State's Gummi Local Government Area during the weekend. The fatal incident occurred when a car carrying wedding party members plunged into a river while attempting to traverse a deteriorated bridge. Passengers aboard the vehicle traveled from Fass village toward Kebbi State, escorting a newly married woman to her husband's residence after her ceremony. The driver, unfamiliar with local road conditions, mistakenly navigated onto a compromised bridge section that workers had temporarily repaired with sand and stone materials. This structural weakness caused the automobile to lose stability and overturn into the water below.

Emergency responders have retrieved seventeen bodies from the accident site, while search operations continue for two missing individuals. The bride managed to escape death along with several other passengers who had exited the vehicle when it initially became trapped on the unstable bridge surface. Muhammad Fatihu, a local resident who witnessed the tragedy, reported that the car tilted and submerged before rescue efforts could begin. The incident highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges affecting rural transportation routes. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the investigation.
