A van accident killed one person and hurt nine others early Sunday morning. The crash happened on the road between Kunak and Lahad Datu at the 29-kilometer mark. Emergency workers responded to the scene around 7:50 am after receiving reports. The 74-year-old driver worked as a substitute and died in the accident. Police said the van carried 10 people who were traveling from Semporna to Sandakan.
The vehicle lost control and moved off the right side of the road. Acting police chief ASP Reduan Rahman explained that the driver could not keep the van straight. Fire department commander Mohd Ridzuan Shahidun said his team found the van resting on the road shoulder. Rescue workers used special hydraulic tools to free the trapped driver from his seat. The passengers ranged in age from 46 to 75 years old.
Medical teams treated four people for minor injuries at the crash site. Five other passengers suffered serious injuries and needed immediate hospital care. Emergency vehicles and ambulances transported all the injured people to medical facilities. Police have started investigating the crash under traffic safety laws.
