A man escapes death, burns while stealing a transformer in Mutoko

A 41-year-old man from Kakomwe Village sustained serious burns after being electrocuted during an attempted theft of electrical equipment at All Souls Mission Hospital in Mutoko. Gift Mawodza remains hospitalized at the same facility where the incident occurred on November 2, 2025, and faces court proceedings. Two accomplices, Simbarashe Tungamirai and Paiben Muparo, fled when Mawodza came into contact with live wires while trying to extract copper cables from a ZETDC transformer.

Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri from the Criminal Investigations Department has issued a public appeal for assistance in locating the suspects who escaped. Authorities note that damaging public utilities carries a mandatory 10-year prison sentence. The three men had targeted the transformer with plans to vandalize the installation and remove armored cables before the electrocution halted their operation.
