Ambassador Owiredu dismisses claims Bawumia was forced on running mate choice

Charles Owiredu shoots down talk that Mahamudu Bawumia had no choice when picking Matthew Opoku-Prempeh as his 2024 election partner. The Abirem lawmaker and former South Africa ambassador spoke on JoyPrime TV Friday about claims from Nyaho Nyso-Tamakloe. Nyaho-Tamakloe said party bosses forced Bawumia to select Napo against his wishes during the last campaign. He made these comments on 3FM back in June 2024 before the official announcement came out. Owiredu thinks the former NPP member knows nothing about current party business.

The ambassador says Nyaho-Tamakloe skips important party meetings and has no inside knowledge about decision making. He pointed out that the critic does not attend National Executive Committee or National Council sessions anymore. Owiredu believes this makes his opinions worthless about party operations. The MP still backs Bawumia completely for future leadership roles. He promises to support whatever running mate choice Bawumia makes for 2028 elections.

Party officials set January 31, 2026 as the date for choosing their next presidential candidate. Owiredu says his loyalty to Bawumia remains strong regardless of future partnerships. He would even support Napo again if party leaders decide that works best.
