AMD claims only its Ryzen AI MAX runs OpenAI's large gpt-oss

Advanced Micro Devices confirms compatibility between its Ryzen AI MAX processors and OpenAI's latest artificial intelligence models. The company provides immediate support for GPT-OSS 20B and GPT-OSS 120B through LM Studio software integration. AMD's Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 processor stands as the single consumer chip capable of handling the larger 120B model without external assistance. The processor accommodates the model's 61-gigabyte memory requirements within its 96-gigabyte graphics allocation. Performance reaches 30 tokens per second through the chip's bandwidth capabilities and mixture-of-experts architecture.

Desktop users can leverage AMD's Radeon 9070 XT graphics card for enhanced 20B model performance. The 16-gigabyte graphics solution delivers rapid response times and superior time-to-first-token metrics. AMD requires software version 25.8.1 or higher for proper functionality across supported hardware. The company's product matrix shows Radeon RX 9000, Radeon AI PRO R9000, and Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards with 16-gigabyte memory configurations that support the smaller model effectively.
