AMD gears up for Ryzen 9000G desktop chips

AMD plans to replace its current Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs with new models that might hit stores by the end of 2025. Insider HXL/9550pro recently shared news about an "AMD AM5 New APU" family coming alongside a fancy MSI Unify-X motherboard during the last three months of 2025. Many tech writers believe these chips could be named "Ryzen 9000G" and will combine AMD's Zen 5 processor cores with RDNA 3.5 graphics technology.

This powerful mix already exists in laptop chips like AMD's Ryzen AI "Strix Halo," "Strix Point," and "Krackan Point" APUs. Most industry watchers expect that AMD will bring high-end "Strix Point" designs to desktop computers or possibly use the "Gorgon Point" design that leaked last week. Early 2024 saw AMD move its "Phoenix" chips from laptops to desktop AM5 systems, establishing a pattern for this transition.

Tech site TechPowerUp had their expert W1zzard test the budget-friendly Ryzen 5 8500G "Phoenix 2" APU last summer. That affordable chip uses both Zen 4 and smaller Zen 4c processor cores. Looking forward, a top-tier "Ryzen 9000G" model could feature twelve total cores - four larger "Zen 5" cores paired with eight smaller "Zen 5c" cores. These chips may also include Radeon 890M integrated graphics and an XDNA 2 neural processing unit for AI tasks.

The shift from laptop to desktop continues AMD's strategy of maximizing chip designs across different products. Thanks to next-generation technologies, these upcoming APUs should deliver better performance than current models. Computer enthusiasts waiting for powerful all-in-one chips may find what they want when these rumored processors arrive. The next few months should bring more information as AMD finalizes its plans for this product line.
