ArenaNet eyes Guild Wars 3 with Unreal Engine shift

Guild Wars fans just got handed another reason to spiral with speculation about ArenaNet’s next move. Back when Park Byeong, who’s filling in as chairman at NCSOFT, couldn’t keep Guild Wars 3 under wraps during a chat with investors, people clocked that ArenaNet wasn’t quite ready to drop the big news. Their PR shuffle was all about how updates and expansions for Guild Wars 2 were the main deal, but nobody missed the part where they stopped short of flat-out denying anything.

Fast-forward to the present, and a new job listing has set the subreddit detectives loose again. ArenaNet is after a contract senior writer-slash-narrative designer, and it’s for a project that’s not Guild Wars 2. The wildest clue? Applicants have to be fluent in MMOs and know their way around Unreal Engine, which makes it seem like ArenaNet’s finally swapping out their in-house tech for something Epic, and the MMO bit all but screams Guild Wars 3’s in the pipeline.

For those actually thinking about sending in a resume, the studio’s list of demands is everything from a bachelor’s in writing fields to five years of pro experience, with two years inside the MMO or open-world trenches, plus AAA cred. Writers also have to flex skills for drama, editing, non-linear story stuff, and juggling both solo and team work, with the Chicago Manual of Style thrown in just for fun. Being tight with Unreal Engine, narrative systems, and game writing is mandatory.

ArenaNet’s been floating ads for some mysterious online project since 2022, so it feels like the floodgates could open at any point. With so few big-budget Western MMOs anywhere on the horizon, Guild Wars 3 might actually be the last hope for fans craving something new.
