Awomolo warns new SANs not to disgrace the Supreme Court

Chief Adegboyega Awomolo delivered guidance to future Senior Advocates during a pre-ceremony induction event. The former Body of Benchers chairman addressed 59 legal professionals scheduled for inauguration September 29, 2025. Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun will conduct the Supreme Court ceremony for the designees. Attorney General Prince Lateef Fagbemi organized the preparatory program.

Awomolo emphasized three essential principles for maintaining professional standards. He stressed honesty, humility and honor as foundations for the elevated legal rank. The veteran advocate warned against behaviors that could damage the position's reputation. Legal professionals must resist temptations that accompany increased status and recognition.

Nigeria's Senior Advocate roster will expand to approximately 959 members following the ceremony. The designation began in 1975 with initial recipients Chief F.R.A. Williams and Dr. Graham Douglas. Awomolo received his Senior Advocate recognition in July 1992 alongside six colleagues. The legal profession continues addressing governance and human rights issues nationwide.
