Trump asks the Supreme Court to gut 14th Amendment

The Trump administration petitioned the Supreme Court Friday to overturn lower court decisions blocking the president's birthright citizenship executive order. Justice Department lawyers filed appeals after federal judges halted the January directive that would deny citizenship to children born on American soil unless one parent holds citizenship or permanent residency. The administration challenges judicial power to issue nationwide injunctions against presidential policies.

Federal courts in multiple states ruled the executive order violates the 14th Amendment's citizenship clause. The constitutional provision grants citizenship to all persons born within United States borders. Trump officials argue the 1868 amendment excludes children of illegal immigrants and temporary visa holders from automatic citizenship rights.

The Justice Department claims universal birthright citizenship encourages illegal border crossings and creates birth tourism industries targeting American hospitals.
