Bandits Force Teachers to Flee Kerio Schools

Teachers' unions pulled their members from over twenty schools across Kerio Valley after violence increased. Armed criminals killed Catholic priest Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett during his return from church services on Thursday. Kenya National Union of Teachers and Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers made the withdrawal decision together. Union leaders said non-local teachers face deliberate targeting from bandits and armed groups. Three security officers from outside the area also died recently from similar attacks.

Government officials placed a nighttime curfew from 6 pm to 6 am across parts of the valley. The restriction aims to restore peace and help police investigate the priest's murder. Deputy County Commissioner Amonde confirmed security operations have grown stronger to bring back normal life. Community members felt shocked after losing the respected religious leader who served many families. Union officials condemned the killing and called Father Bett a community pillar and friend.

Both teacher organizations sent letters to the Security Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen demanding action against regional banditry. Union representatives want government forces to eliminate the criminal groups permanently. Empty classrooms remain closed across the area as uncertainty continues affecting local schools. Parents and teachers unite in grief over recent deaths and demand lasting security solutions for their communities.
