Beitbridge bust nets drugs worth US$477k

Authorities at Beitbridge Border Post seized drugs worth nearly 477,000 dollars after intercepting two Malawian passengers last week. Officers discovered 448.5 kilograms of dagga and 5,700 bottles of Bronclear hidden beneath bags of granules inside a truck and trailer. Aaron Phiri from Dedza District and Geoffrey Gwiriza from Baraga Village were arrested after sniffer dogs Skippy and Bolt alerted their handlers to the concealed cargo. Police are searching for driver Makauli Muponda, whose passport was found in the vehicle cabin.

Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube from Beitbridge confirmed the contraband was wrapped in yellow tape and black plastic inside 27 sacks and 114 boxes. The dagga holds a street value of 448,500 dollars, while the cough syrup is valued at 28,500 dollars. Customs officials secured the drugs under seizure number 014320L pending investigation. Both suspects remain detained while authorities test white granules also recovered from the shipment.
