Benfica tops Club World Cup group after 1-0 win over Bayern

Benfica defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 during their final group stage match at the Club World Cup. Andreas Schjelderup found the back of the net after 13 minutes of play. The Norwegian forward connected with a pass from the right wing. His shot sailed past the German goalkeeper for the match winner. The Portuguese club secured all three points from the contest.

The victory moved Benfica to seven points and first place standings. Bayern Munich finished second with six total points. Both European clubs earned spots for the next tournament round. The Round of 16 draw has already been determined. Each team knows their upcoming opponent.

Bayern Munich will meet Brazilian side Flamengo for their next match. Benfica awaits either Chelsea from England or Esperance from Tunisia. The winner of that group will determine the Portuguese team's opponent. Tournament officials will confirm the matchup after group play ends. Both clubs prepare for knockout stage competition.

Boca Juniors from Argentina failed to advance past group stage play. Auckland City from New Zealand also saw their tournament run end. These two teams could not collect enough points. Group stage results eliminated both clubs from further competition. The field narrows as stronger teams move forward.
