The High Court put the brakes on Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya entering their pleas after the defense squad filed a constitutional challenge against Justice Emmanuel Baguma. Martha Karua from Kenya rolled up and told the court that her clients think Baguma is biased, and there is already a complaint sitting with the Judicial Service Commission about him. The judge agreed to wait until the Constitutional Court weighs in, and everybody is coming back later this month.
Besigye and Lutale got hit with treason charges way back, but still have not entered pleas because the prosecution never handed over the actual evidence bundle. Karua pointed out that her clients cannot plead to charges when they do not even know what specific acts or evidence the state is bringing against them. The duo has been locked up for over a year without bail, and the defense wants the court to cut them loose while this mess gets sorted.
