Bike Hero Saves Lives in Remote Kenyan Village

Lucia walks across eastern Kenya every morning before sunrise to help sick people. The Community Health Worker carries medicine and visits families who live far from hospitals. She checks pregnant mothers and treats children who need medical care. Lucia has done this job for over 10 years without much pay. People trust her because she cares about their health problems.

World Bicycle Relief gave Lucia a bicycle that changed her daily work completely. She used to walk 20 kilometers between homes and could only visit five families each day. The new bike helps her reach 15 to 20 patients during the same time period. Lucia says every minute matters when people need medical help. Her bicycle requires almost no repairs and works on rough roads.

Kenya's government provides little support for rural healthcare workers like Lucia. Organizations step forward to fill the gaps where official help falls short. Community members call Lucia more reliable than local medical centers. One mother credits Lucia with saving her baby's life. Lucia rides home each evening knowing she helped her neighbors stay healthy.
