Black Coffee takes divorce battle to appeals court

This celebrity divorce just won't end. DJ Black Coffee, legally Nkosinathi Maphumulo, got permission to appeal his case. The Supreme Court will hear his challenge against a major ruling about his marriage to Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa. This follows over six years of public legal fighting.

A lower court made two big decisions last year. It said their traditional customary union from 2011 was legally binding. That same ruling also canceled their later civil ceremony from 2017.

The musician argues that both conclusions were wrong. He claims proof for a proper customary marriage never existed. His position states required mutual consent was never truly established.

He is also fighting a spousal support order. Black Coffee contends his ex's financial needs were not adequately demonstrated. The maintenance award lacked a factual foundation in his view.

Mlotshwa opposes this appeal completely. She supports the original judgment validating their customary union. She points to his participation in traditional rituals as clear consent.

Regarding the money, she believes the court correctly evaluated her situation. Her financial requirements justified the support order according to her stance.

Legal experts think this appeal could have wider impacts. The final decision might influence how courts handle overlapping marriage types. It could set precedents for customary law interpretations.

The case continues its drag through the legal system this year. The Supreme Court's future ruling will finally provide some clarity. Meanwhile, the public keeps watching this expensive celebrity spectacle unfold.
