Blue Economy seen as key to Bangladesh’s ocean-driven future

The Blue Economy represents a strategic approach to using ocean resources in a way that supports both economic growth and environmental protection. Its main principle is that the health of marine ecosystems should never be compromised for profit. This strategy covers traditional sectors like fisheries, as well as newer areas such as shipping, coastal tourism, renewable marine energy, and biotechnology. For Bangladesh, with its large maritime territory, the Blue Economy offers significant economic potential for the 21st century.

Fisheries remain a critical sector, supporting about 12 percent of the population and providing over 60 percent of daily animal protein. The sector contributes around 3.57 percent to total GDP and more than 25 percent to agricultural GDP. However, challenges such as rising demand and environmental pressures from overfishing and climate change threaten these resources. Sustainable management requires shifting to deep-sea fishing, investing in advanced technology, and developing skilled human resources.

Promoting high-value marine species through hatcheries and modern aquaculture methods, like Biofloc and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, can improve production while easing environmental stress. Accurate data collection, fishing bans during spawning, and establishing Marine Protected Areas are necessary steps for long-term sustainability. Equipping small-scale fishers with modern tools and training, and integrating their knowledge with scientific methods, will help reduce illegal fishing and resource waste.

Preventing marine pollution and enforcing strict environmental laws are also essential to safeguard aquatic ecosystems. Protecting mangrove forests and building resilient coastal infrastructure will help address climate change impacts. The future of the Blue Economy depends on responsible resource management, the use of technology, and strong policy decisions to secure both economic growth and environmental health for future generations.
