Boy, 8, charged with murder after shooting cousin, 7

South African authorities charged an eight-year-old boy with murder after he fatally shot his seven-year-old cousin on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025, in Mqanduli, Eastern Cape. Police reported the child accessed his father's licensed firearm from a bedroom and fired at his cousin, who died instantly at the Nothintwa locality scene.

The South African Police Service opened cases of murder against the boy and negligence charges against the 48-year-old father for failing to secure the weapon. Officers placed the young suspect under social worker supervision, but officials did not clarify whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

Authorities arrested the father before releasing him on warning, pending his appearance at the Mqanduli Magistrate's Court. Captain Welile Matyolo confirmed investigations continue as communities debate whether courts should prosecute the child or hold adults accountable for the tragedy.
