Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah commissioned 530 Blue Water Guards at the Western Naval Command in Ezinlibo. The ceremony marked completion of the second training phase under Ghana's Blue Water Initiative. These new graduates join 453 previously trained guards, bringing the total to 983 personnel. The government plans to train 2,000 guards this year to fight illegal mining activities. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources partners with the Minerals Commission on this environmental protection program.
Recruits completed a demanding four-week training course with three distinct phases. The program covered swimming, boat operations, evidence gathering, and survival skills. Commander Samuel Kwaku Boateng-Asiedu supervised the intensive preparation at the naval facility. Guards from Savannah, Western North, and Upper West regions will monitor rivers and enforce environmental laws. Minister Buah praised their dedication and called them community defenders rather than simple security personnel.
