Bulgaria Strengthens Border Security, Calls for Continued EU Support

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov met with European Commissioner Magnus Brunner about migration and security issues. Bulgaria plays a major role protecting Europe's outer borders from illegal crossings. The Prime Minister thanked the Commission for supporting Bulgaria's entry into the Schengen zone. Both leaders discussed how border security helps all European Union countries stay safe. Their talks focused on stopping unauthorized migration through better border controls.

The European Commission gave Bulgaria more than 300 million euros during the past three years. This money paid for border surveillance systems, special vehicles, and flying drones. Zhelyazkov noted that Bulgaria also spends its resources on border protection. The country hired more Border Police officers to watch the frontiers. These investments protect both Bulgaria and the entire European Union.

Bulgaria works closely with Frontex, the European border agency. The country also partners with Romania, Greece, and Turkey on border matters. Officials from these nations share information and coordinate their actions. Since September 2023, fewer migrants have tried crossing from Turkey into Bulgaria. This shows that joint efforts reduce illegal border crossings.

After joining Schengen, Bulgaria stopped checking people at its Romanian border. Security conditions remain stable despite removing these controls. The Prime Minister believes border checks should not return after July 1. Bulgaria and Romania will use other methods to maintain safety near their shared boundary. Similar measures already work at the Greek border.

The leaders also talked about wars affecting European security. Russia continues attacking Ukraine, creating regional instability. Conflicts in Middle Eastern countries also challenge European safety. These situations require continued cooperation between EU member states.
