A YY Coaches bus flipped over and caught fire near Makindu Trading Centre Monday evening, with many people feared dead. The crash happened around 5 PM when the driver lost control of the Scania bus with plate number UAV 701C on the Kisoga-Nyenga Road in Buikwe District. The bus was heading from Katosi to Jinja when it went off the road at Makindu Village, turning over and bursting into flames. Police and rescue teams hurried to put out the fire and take out bodies as survivors went to nearby hospitals for help.
This adds to the growing number of road crashes in Uganda. Last week, businessman Rajiv Ruparelia died when his Nissan GTR hit road barriers at Busabala Flyover, flipped, and caught fire. Earlier this year, ten people died when a taxi and a truck crashed in Kyenjojo District. A nine-car pileup on Kampala-Bombo Road killed five and hurt 21 people in March. Uganda saw 25,107 road crashes last year with 5,154 deaths, up 7% from the year before.
