ChatGPT is now prescribing psychosis to men in New York

A 60-year-old New York resident developed bromism after following dietary guidance from ChatGPT. The artificial intelligence chatbot recommended sodium bromide as a table salt substitute when the man requested alternatives. He consumed this substance for three months before experiencing severe symptoms. Medical professionals at a local hospital diagnosed bromide poisoning after the patient exhibited paranoia, psychosis, and sleep disturbances. The case appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine journal.

Researchers investigated whether ChatGPT continues to provide similar recommendations about bromide compounds. The chatbot suggested bromide as a chloride alternative without mentioning potential toxicity risks. The patient recovered after discontinuing bromide consumption and receiving appropriate medical treatment. This incident highlights the risks associated with relying on artificial intelligence for medical guidance rather than consulting healthcare professionals. Medical experts emphasize that chatbots lack the clinical judgment necessary for safe health recommendations.
