China reaffirms Gambian health ties with 23rd medical team

China swapped out their doctors working at Gambian hospitals during a ceremony on Friday. The Chinese Embassy welcomed the 23rd medical team as they took over from the 22nd group heading home. Ambassador Liu Jin praised both countries for keeping their health partnership strong over many years. The diplomat said Chinese doctors have helped thousands of sick Gambians despite language problems and old hospital equipment. Health cooperation remains one of six main areas where China and Gambia work together.

The outgoing medical team leader Dr. Cai Guiyang felt proud about what his doctors accomplished during their stay. His group finished all their hospital duties and taught local medical staff new skills. They also helped create stronger ties between Chinese hospitals and the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital. The team set new records for medical cooperation between the two nations. Local hospital staff and patients supported the Chinese doctors throughout their service.

China has pumped 15 million dalasi worth of medical supplies into Gambian hospitals since July last year. The money came from two sources with 5 million from the medical team and 10 million through hospital partnerships. Two Gambian doctors traveled to China for six months of special training in women's health. Dr. Mustapha Bittaye from the main teaching hospital thanked the departing doctors for their hard work. He asked the new team to keep talking openly about any problems they face.
